I write jargon-free, concise public communications for both web and print, often on complex issues, and to strict deadline. These communications are based on briefings from marketing, fundraising, policy and campaigns specialists, and are tailored to suit a range of audiences including campaign groups, academics, journalists and the public.
Issues range from international development and tax avoidance, to trade and aid, gender inequality, healthcare, human rights and the environment. I also work with campaigning organisations on issues such as cancer and end-of-life care, stroke, and violence and injury prevention.
Recent writing commissions have been with ActionAid International, Transnational Institute (TNI), Fairtrade Foundation, Marie Curie Cancer Care, International Crisis Group, the Stroke Association and Bliss.
I am a skilled editor, offering all levels of editorial support:
- Substantive editing – redrafting and restructuring copy to meet the brief; clarifying the meaning of sentences where necessary and eliminating repetition or unnecessary copy (plus all listed in technical and copy editing, below).
- Technical editing – ensuring the writing style is appropriate for the audience, questioning factual errors, considering and querying apparent omissions - all with the aim of achieving a balanced document; making text easy to read, and eliminating discriminatory language; checking titles and references (plus all listed in copy editing, below).
- Copy editing – checking grammar, spelling, capitalisation, punctuation and consistency throughout the document.
Recent editorial collaborations have been with the World Health Organization, Stop TB Partnership, UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), SOMO (Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations), ActionAid UK and Forum for the Future.
I am a skilled story-gatherer, selecting and interviewing people whose stories form the basis of features, and campaign and fundraising resources. I have interviewed children, young people and adults in the UK and overseas, including Malawi, Former Yugoslavia, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, India, East Timor, Kenya and Uganda, covering issues ranging from the resettlement of refugees, healthcare and the Millennium Development Goals, to drought, trauma counselling and discrimination against minority groups such as Dalits.
I have interviewed teachers for Teacher Training Agency recruitment campaigns; council leaders for features in the Labour Party's Agenda magazine; and doctors, nurses, patients, academics and people of faith for charity features and annual reviews.
Recent work includes interviewing hospice in-patients and day patients for one of the UK's main care providers for those with life-limiting illness, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
I am able to provide proofreading and picture research services.
